This Month's
WETA Focus

December 2008

The holiday season has arrived, and with it comes the annual renewal of family bonds and community spirit as we gather together and experience the joy of fellowship and celebration. WETA too is a family, an extended community of people who believe in the value of public broadcasting. You, our members, who support WETA's mission of public service, are vital to what we do. In concert with members, major donors, and our partners at foundations and corporations and in government, we are able to produce and broadcast superb programming and provide unique services and resources to the public in Greater Washington and beyond.

The New Year brings challenges and opportunities, including uncertain economic times for the nation and for our region — and a momentous change in the landscape of television as we enter the age of all-digital broadcasting. With your ongoing support, WETA will continue to thrive — and we are well prepared for DTV. WETA has been investing in digital technology and broadcasting digital television for years. Although the television landscape will become more crowded and complex after midnight on February 17 when analog broadcasts cease, our programming will remain distinctive, reflecting your high standards for educational, informative television.

It is, however, of paramount importance to our mission of service that amidst this new landscape of digital channels, viewers be able to find the WETA programming that they so highly value. We want no viewer left behind. Consequently, you have been hearing from WETA about how to prepare your household for DTV. This month, an insert in the WETA magazine spotlights the four DTV channels WETA now presents, the content of which will evolve in the new year as we approach February 17. These four digital channels offer more viewing opportunities for the programs you love.

Looking forward, our broadcasts will remain vibrant and engaging; and as a company we will continue to seek out innovative ways to serve the public. Join us on our journey into a new year and please continue to support our mission. Consider renewing your membership or making a year-end gift to WETA. Happy holidays, and thank you for your vital support and for being an important part of the WETA family.
